Ranela is one of my NPCs, but in order to keep all of my characters in my mind, I have decided that even the NPCs deserve a page of their own, so this one is for Ranela.

Ranela is A'drov's neice, the daughter of his eldest sister Dranela. She is the middle child of three, with an older sister Unela, and a younger brother M'ran, who also rides a blue now. One of the interesting things is that Ranela is actually older than A'drov, and she Impressed her first time up on what was her only chance to Impress, for she would have been too old to stand for any other clutches. I made her a little quiet and reserved. One reason for this, and the one that most people believed, was that her mother is more than a bit of a martinet, but this wasn't the only reason, or even the major one. Ranela prefers women, and didn't want to let her mother know, so she kept it from everyone until she couldn't anymore, which was when Patreth chose her.

Her mother was a little hurt about the fact that her daughter kept this from her, but Ranela was certain that her mother would be hurt to know that her daughter preferred those of her own sex, so Dranela was due to be hurt either way. Ranela considered keeping the knowledge from her mother the lesser of two evils, really. Eventually she managed to square with her mother on this issue, and although Dranela will never really be happy that her daughter is a lesbian, she has accepted it.

On a side note, I also had Dranela confront A'drov on the matter before making her peace with her daughter, which was the first time that she had ever admitted that A'drov knew something that she did not and the moment when she started to see her youngest sibling as an adult in his own right. So this event was a good thing all around.

Although Ranela is no longer hiding her sexual orientation, she felt that it would be a good idea to move to Rising Dawn Weyrhold when she was given the chance, since this way she would be shoving her preferences in her mother's face, so to speak. She feels that it will make her mother more comfortable if she doesn't have to worry about what her friends will think of her daughter, and this is really the only way they're ever likely to be comfortable with one another. The move was also good for her in another way, for she was promoted to a Wingsecond of the Searing Star Wing. She'll work hard for her Wingleader and Wing, and since she's such a responsible and steady person, she's a good choice for such a position.

There are still plenty of things in store for Ranella. Right now, she has yet to have her first love interest, for although she knows that she prefers women, she hasn't come across someone of like inclination who has been interested in her. This is probably because there aren't a lot of lesbians being played at the Weyr presently. I think I'll throw her a love interest in NPC form, which is fine, since she's an NPC. And I can play with that for a bit, although I hope that someday someone else will have a character that she will be compatible with.
